What is the thing you like most about teaching?
I love the connection I get to make with each student when teaching.  Even when teaching the same basic skills, each student will learn differently.  Having a positive relationship helps us to find a way to make learning fun and easy.

How do you inspire students to practice more?
It's important to learn about each student's individual interest and motivation.  Making a person excited about music makes him/her look forward to practicing and coming to lessons.

What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a students’ development?
Participating in a recital gives a student the opportunity to share music!  So much of music at this point is done individually.  It's a gift to have the chance to experience the confidence and pleasure in seeing other people enjoy your musical efforts.

What is your favorite type of music?
I grew up in Classical.  I use it now as a traditional backbone to understanding music, which can then be expanded to any other instrument or type of music.

 What was studying music like?
As a child, I took piano lessons from the same teacher for 13 years!  During high school, I played flute in the marching and concert band for 4 years.  I found an incredible energy in playing and learning music with a group.  Combined with the attention and detail I learned from individual lessons, I ended up with a life long love of music.

Tell us about your latest band or project:
I am currently working on a collection of contemprary songs to record for my mom for Christmas!

Hobbies outside of music?
I have three children, ages 4,9, and 13, who take up most of my time outside of piano with homework, soccer, and play dates.  When I have a quiet moment, I love to read!

8. If you could give a quick tip for piano what would it be?
Keep a repetoire of songs you've enjoyed learning.  Music is not just about learning new music, it's about being able to sit down and play music.  Don't forget to continue loving the songs you love to play!

Celebrating Student Achievement • The Musical Ladder System®

San Jose School of Music is excited to be the only music school in San Jose that will offer it’s students the opportunity to earn special color wristband bracelets (kids and teens love them!), trophies AND certificates for passing musical tests with the Musical Ladder System®. It was created by Marty Fort, director of a national Music Academy Association. The system has a patent pending and is being used by music schools nationwide. Other schools may offer trophies and certificates but, none will inspire their students like the “Musical Ladder System®”

More importantly when our students have a Musical Ladder System® challenge coming up, they practice more, their parents are proud, their teachers are proud, and everybody wins!
